ABOUT MY CAMPAIGN
Empowering our Community
As a member of the Blount County School Board, District 1, my focus will be on Students, Teachers, and Schools.
Kids need an adult to stand up for them. They need food, an education, and to feel safe and secure.
Teachers need another pay raise, technological and instructional tools, classroom supplies, and a strong personal support system.
For schools, I will be pushing for needed repairs and fighting against vouchers to keep public tax money in the public schools.
About
My name is Phil Young
I began my teaching career at Lonsdale, a Knoxville, inner-city school where I spent 10 years. Then, I moved to wonderful Walland, right here in Blount County, teaching there for the next 20 years. While at Walland, I earned my Master’s Degree in Education, was the school’s Teacher of the Year twice, and was awarded the distinction of being Blount County’s Teacher of the Year! Over the course of my career, I received $95,000 worth of grants and numerous awards for environmental achievements.
I am co-owner with my wife, Patti, of a small equestrian facility near Heritage High School, where we give riding lessons and have hosted over 150 horse and science camps.
Patti is a retired teacher from Maryville City Schools. She also has a Master’s degree in Education and 34 years of experience. Together, we have 64 years in the classroom! I have been a member of the KCEA, BCEA, TEA, and NEA my whole teaching career.
I am now retired and still want to help students, teachers, and schools. My family were all educators and education is in my system. I will work to fix the problems of Blount County Schools. I have the experience, the drive, and the willingness to serve on the School Board.

Testimonials
“I worked with Phil for several years at Blount County Schools. I found him to be honest, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. I know that he will have the best interests of students and parents in the decisions he will help make for our schools.

Let’s Put A Teacher On The School Board!

Heritage High School
Meeting with Heritage HS Principal Jed West is always beneficial. When he was Principal at Walland, I witnessed a positive change in the entire staff’s attitude and professionalism. This trickled down to the students. Mr. West knows that if a student succeeds, the community succeeds.
Basically, HHS is doing well. They have a good graduation rate, teacher-student ratio, and school security (Thank you BC Sheriff’s Dept.). Challenges were echoed regarding student behavior/mental health.
So…..
Let’s Put a Teacher on the School Board and I will work to get the specialists and training you need in your school!

Eagleton College and Career Academy (ECCA) is a community-oriented school. Principal Mark Dowlen noted the stability middle-schoolers feel as they move up levels in the grades 8-12 school. He feels fortunate to have the only full-time social worker in BCS, a need expressed by other teachers and administrators.
So…….
Let’s Put a Teacher on the School Board and I will work to get the behavior/social interventionists you need, plus, I’ll visit your school!

These volunteers had a great and rewarding time picking up litter along Highway 321. The crew picked up 10 bags of trash. It's a coincidence that Phil Young is running for the BC School Board of which Heritage High and Heritage Middle are a part. Please bring a friend and vote for Phil on August 6.

Protect The Park
For the last 30 years, my class would go on ranger-led field trips to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. After recent government budget cuts, â…“ of the rangers have lost their jobs, stretching services to visitors. I want our National Park to be available to all Blount County School’s students, therefore, I attend most of the bi-weekly rallies.
So…..
Protect the Park and Let’s Put a Teacher on the School Board

Congratulations on being selected Teacher of the Year...The hard work and accomplishments you acquire daily have shown the dedication you have as a professional educator. Your portfolio will be forwarded to the Regional State Department.

BCEA Meeting
I received an invitation to speak… and listen… at a recent Blount County Education Association meeting was very informative. I was able to give local educators a little information about myself, but more important was what they could tell me about the current classroom climate. They listed behavioral support, reduction of special education caseloads, updating furniture, and regular school visitation as priorities.
So……
Let’s Put a Teacher on the School Board and I promise to visit YOUR school!
